Important points of the Greek legislation for Assisted Reproduction
According to Greek legislation (3305/2005) in matters concerning assisted reproductive technologies:
Women of up to 50 years old can go through assisted reproduction technologies (ART) treatment. There is no limit for the male age.
Use of donor sperm in IUI and IVF is allowed.
Use of donor oocytes in IVF is allowed. This procedure is suitable for couples that are of advanced maternal age or have gone through many failed IVF attempts or when the female partner cannot conceive with her own oocytes
Oocyte and sperm donors remain anonymous.
Single women may go through ART treatment.
Gamete, zygote and embryo cryopreservation is allowed. Storage can last up to five years, with the option to extend it for a further five.
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis and screening is allowed. Sex selection is prohibited.
The use of a surrogate mother is allowed, after a Greek Court decision and as long as the surrogate and the couple are Greek residents.
Before any assisted reproduction technique the couple must be informed of the procedure and sign a consent form.
